Maldar:
Etymology: identical to the old Romance Jewish word meldar, meaning “to study, to practise oneself,” hence “to make efforts,” probably from the Greek meletáō (“to practise, exercise oneself”).
Earliest source: 14th century.
Intransitive verb: To hurry, to make an effort, in order to obtain something.
At Maldà, we strive to preserve the past, the present, and the future. We safeguard the most precious — and at the same time most abundant — element of our land: stone. The stone that has given us streets, homes, places of worship, flour and oil mills… and that has stood as the backdrop to our history.
Today, we want stone to once again become the protagonist, allowing its hidden soul to emerge and reveal itself to the world in all its beauty.
Maldant la Pedra is a sculptural art festival that, every year since 2021, has brought together five sculptors from around the world for eleven days to work with stone, transforming the streets of this small rural village into an open-air artists’ workshop for visitors.
The slow, delicate, and meticulous process of carving stone becomes a public event, open to both local residents and visitors.
Little by little, blow by blow, the landscape fills with stone souls that bring life and transform our territory into an open-air museum, ready to be seen and experienced.
Welcome
Sou a Maldà, gairebé la fi de la Vall del Corb
We invite you to follow this itinerary in two stages: an initial walk through the heart of the village to discover everything it has prepared for you, followed by a second circular route that leads you into the silence of the cultivated fields, all the way to the Ermita de Sant Joan.
Perhaps you will sense the watchful presence of Montagu’s harriers, starlings, and eagle owls standing guard like sentinels. And with a bit of luck, the sea breeze will cool the evening air.
Enjoy this ancestral dryland landscape, with all its biodiversity and lithic heritage. Feel the strength of the land with every step, in every carved piece. The millennia-old patience of these stones remains intact, waiting for you. Enjoy, touch, feel.
Welcome to the open-air museum: Maldant la Pedra, traces of a future.
